Purattasi is a special month for worshipping Lord Vishnu, especially on Saturdays. Devotees believe praying to him during this time, particularly as Venkateshwara, brings wealth and prosperity.

Mythology behind Purattasi Saturday

According to legend, Lord Vishnu came to Earth as Venkateshwara at Tirupati Hills during Purattasi. It's also believed that Saturn (Shani) loses power in this month. So, worshipping Lord Vishnu on Purattasi Saturdays brings blessings and reduces Saturn's negative effects.

Rituals of Purattasi Saturday Viratham (Fasting)

During Purattasi Saturdays, devotees of Lord Vishnu fast, with some doing partial fasts throughout the month and others fasting strictly on Saturdays. They avoid smoking, drinking, and non-vegetarian food. Devotees also make Mavilakku, a lamp from rice flour, jaggery, and ghee. It is believed Lord Vishnu blesses them through the light of this lamp. Fasting is seen as a way to purify oneself and get closer to the Lord. Hymns dedicated to Lord Vishnu are also chanted during this time.
